This is an advent calendar you can find in supermarkets and shops here in Finland. I think this is the cheapest at 1 euro and has a simple design. This advent calendar has doors numbered from 1 to 24 which corresponds to the first of December, and ending on Christmas Eve, and has chocolates behind each door.
Since today is 1st December, you can open this calendar by pressing the door marked #1. Tomorrow, it will be the door marked #2, and so on. You continue opening the numbers corresponding to the dates until 24th December.

There is only one chocolate that can be taken each day and there are 3 kids in the house. So to avoid any possible sibling fight, there are rules to follow: each kid will have a chance to open per day and it will be from youngest to oldest. Christmas is about love and sharing and so this calendar will practice their virtue of sharing.
Christmas is coming soon and it’s time for Santa to come out. In Finland, you can see Santa Claus chocolates in different forms. Some are Santa choco-lollipops or bar chocolates with Santa embossed in it. But my fave Santa chocolate is this one in terms of looks, hehe:

I saw these chocolates last Christmas but I didn’t buy. This time, we were tempted to buy coz we thought it would be a nice give-away to our nephews and niece when we go home for vacation. I think there’s no chocolate that looks like this in Thailand. I’m not sure in Philippines though.
Is it yummy? Is it hollow? First, we bought 1 pack to try it. We found out that it is yummy but hollow. This is a fragile ‘pasalubong’ or give-away. There’s a possibility that Santa will be pulverized before the kids can open it. Aside from that, this chocolate will take up space in our luggage. So we decided to buy bar and boxed chocolates of different kinds instead.
Hubby purposely missed the bus last week coz he wanted to bring his 2 trophies back home.
The kids were so excited when they saw the trophies. They asked their dad how he got them. His answer was simple: practice and divine intervention.
Hubby was very excited to pose with his trophies coz it was something like ‘Asia beats Europe in Areva Golf Championship 2008‘ beating golfers from France, Germany, Finland, South Africa, in 2 categories Stableford and Stroke Play… Last year hubby placed third.
Congratulations dear hubby for winning the golf tournament…
One of the things the kids had to adjust when we moved to Finland was staying in a new house in a completely different environment which is quieter compared to our previous home. Quietness can be a bit scary to the young kids. So it can happen that in the middle of the night, I would be awakened by my daughter’s call. She had one of these bedtime fears and she wanted me to be around. It could be bothersome if the call is frequent and you’re really sleepy. To deal with it we tried to do the following:
-Place a night-light in the room beside her
-Say a prayer before bedtime
-Stay with her before she sleeps
-Let her hold a favorite toy or object she feels secure with
-A kiss and a hug before leaving the room
But sometimes she still calls ‘mommy’ in the middle of the night despite the above. In this case, I have to sleepily walk to her room and stay with her for few minutes until she dozes back to sleep. I would be glad if she gets back to dreamland quickly…
I’ve read one article from ParentCenter that you can also do a bit of compromise here. Share your room but not your bed. This is good if you don’t want to walk in the middle of the night to another room.
My big boy used to have bedtime fears when we were still in Thailand. He was a little boy then. But last year when we moved to Finland, I was surprised that he had adjusted well to his new bedroom.
So no worry, I’m sure kids will eventually outgrow their bedtime fears….

I wrote in my previous post about hubby taking the bus to office coz it’s a long drive to work. About an hour’s drive. And his appendicitis operation gets uncomfortable when he sits too long plus the weather condition is not good. It’s dark. Sun rises at 8:49 and sun sets at 15:46 as of yesterday. So whenever he drives to work and back home, it’s always dark. Sometimes it rains, too. It could also get slippery during winter although the car has winter tires already. I prefer he takes the bus.
But then yesterday he finally drove to work. Well, he missed the bus. So he took the car.
And guess what he brought home? His two trophies. He won their company’s golf tournament before he got an operation. But he missed the championship party and picture taking held the other week. His colleagues called him while he was recovering and wanted him to attend the party but hubby couldn’t make it.
Anyway, he was able to bring his trophies last night but I hope he won’t miss the bus anymore until he’s 100% well…

After the appendicitis operation followed by a post operation infection, hubby is now back to work. He is supposed to report back to work this week according to doctor’s recommendation plus two more weeks due to infected post operation BUT he decided to go to office last Tuesday, 11 Nov 2008. Since his workplace is about an hour’s drive from home, he takes the office bus. He still can’t drive that far. He can drive only short distance. He even told me that his operation starts to ache if he sits long time in front of computer, usually he feels it in the afternoon.
His decision to report to work earlier is because of our upcoming vacation to Thailand and Philippines on 13 Dec. He has a lot of pending tasks to do since his operation. In fact, hubby’s colleague brought to our house his office laptop so he can do some reports while he is recovering. Now, hubby has about 5 weeks to complete all his pending tasks before we embark on a month long vacation. Another pending job when we come back next year.
We are happy that he is recovering well. He’s through with his daily wound care visits at the health center. And I’m done with my duty as a weekend nurse and weekday nurse thereafter.
In my previous work, whenever we had urgent meetings in our unit we could sometimes set it with a knock on the door coz my supervisor and colleagues rooms are just adjacent. Great yeah? So meetings are easily called unless we are in the training room, but still this is not a problem for the boss coz there are different ways to set a face-to-face meeting, there’s email or mobile phone. And when we bump each other in the hallway, there’s word of mouth.
There are some situations though that calls for online business meetings. It’s when you can’t be there in person but still need the interactivity of a face-to-face meeting. So you are out of town and need to join a brainstorming meeting, or on a business trip and need to discuss developments with project with team members. What can be convenient and easier than a streaming web based video conferencing. I had a friend who’s a medical representative in the US and she always mentions about teleconferencing. It’s part of her job.
A web conferencing solution enables you to select a time and date and whom to invite for your virtual meeting, then it sends the email invitations and reminders for you. You can also benefit from the tools such as streaming an unlimited number of videos or pictures simultaneously, seamless joining, participation tools and interactive whiteboard, choose how to share your desktop, and upload your meeting materials. A security protection also ensures that you have a safe virtual presentation.
